But I never stole anything!!

This is the ninth post in this series on the Ten Commandments

I was inspired by the book  “The Tender Commandments” by Ron Mehl

The Eighth Commandment

“Thou Shall Not Steal”

I like my title

But, I never stole anything!!!

It just kind of popped into my head when I got ready to write this

Did you know most most business figure for theft in their pricing?

I had a friend who took hotel management

She said hotels figure 10 – 12% just to cover theft

WOW!!!!

I’m guilty!!!!!

I’ve had a few hotel towels around the house

(Well at those prices I should get something!!!)

I once worked as a Rural Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service

We would have some training every once in a while

Or at conventions we would have a workshop

Our state shop steward would be in charge of some of these workshops or trainings

She would always tell us

“If it isn’t yours don’t take it!!”

Simple

Yet I know few postal workers who lost good jobs

They took things that didn’t belong to them

I’m not even going to go into the banks and financial experts who have stolen millions

Some will read this and think

“Well (title) I never stole anything”

What did our shop steward say

“If it isn’t yours, don’t take it”

I know this seems small

But!!!

Listen up

Did you ever take a paper clip or rubber band from work??

Couple sheets of paper

or a pen or pencil?

an envelope

“Well that’s not much”

My employer can certainly afford it

Can they?

Let’s say you work for a big company

One that can afford it

They all take a couple of sheets of paper

That’s 200,000 sheets of paper

What if they did it ever month

or ever week

Wow

Now that adds up

There are other ways to steal too

From ourselves and our employers

In most jobs you get paid for 8hrs a day

But how much time do you really give your employer?

In your business

Do you give your customer a good value for their dollar

When we don’t do our best

Or give our best

In what ever we are doing

We are really stealing from ourselves

Our lives would be so much richer if we would give our best and be our best no matter what we are doing.

  • It's funny that even motel towels are stolen. But it sure is not good and might end up being chased by the staffs and pay double on your behalf.

  • I have been guilty of stealing the towels. I sometimes wonder why we want to do those kinds of things.

    Thank You Chester
This was a  really interesting post really made you think about stealing of any kind, no I have never stolen motel towels, But I did hear a story about someone who did and the owner chased him down for about 50 miles to get them back. So weather it be towels from a motel or paper clips from work or even stealing ones Time, it is still stealing
    Thank You Steve
    Sharon

  • Can't imagine being chased down for a towel!!!
    Thanks for the story!!

    Chester,

I like your Christian blogs! I am certainly guilty of being a thief many times in my life! In fact one of the guys I admired at work during my younger days taught me that "you can never steal enough stuff" from your employer !  WOW.
Now that I'm much older and further along in my Christian walk, I do my best to adhere to the "if it isn't mine, dont take it."
In the end we are ALL sinners, but praise God for his gift of grace! I know I"m going to need it!

"In the end we are all sinners" that says it all!!!! But by the Grace of God.

  • Chester,
You are so right about stealing.  I have never really thought about a paper clip or piece of paper, but you are so right.  It does add up.
I agree that we need too give our best or we are just stealing from ourselves.

    Jaden

  • Thanks Jaden

It's amazing when you think about it, and most of us don't think about it. It really hit me when I started thinking about it and after talking to a few people about how much theft cost companies, amazing!!

  • Chester,
You make all of us think where we've done something we shouldn't have. Like the others, none of us are without guilt here. Thanks for being at cause.

Just a little food for thought. I'm as guilty as anyone!! But forgiven!!! ;-)

  • Hey Chester,

Well, I've never taken the towels at any of the hotels at which I've stayed but I have taken those kool little soaps and shampoos!

I guess, in a way what you're pointing out is that their are two different types of "stealing."  Conscious stealing and Subconscious stealing.  Many of us, I dare say all of us have stolen something from a hotel, a club, an employer, without even realizing it.  A soap here, a pcs of paper there, a pen.  You're absolutely right ... it does all add up doesn't it!

I agree that we don't give our best in everything that we do we are in fact Subconsciously stealing from ourselves.  Always give your best, expect the best in others and respect the property of others as you would want them to respect yours as well.

    Thanks for sharing Chester,

    Kevin

    Hey Chester,

My father drummed in to me that stealing even little things is wrong - he just wouldn't even consider it however small it is. His Mum lived by the bible to the word.

I have to admit that when I stay in a hotel, I take the little soaps/shampoos, I figured I was supposed to use it anyway so they wouldn't mind! Now, when I go camping etc, I have these handy travel sized soaps!

    ;-) Emma

  • Emma

I think a lot of us have those little soaps!!! I think that they are included in your room!! But that brings up a good point!!! Do you take it if you didn't use it. Now where can we go with that? You have me thinking now!!

All the better reason to be a Christian.  It makes trusting in Jesus all the more important for HE lived with all these problems yet without sin.  Thanks Chester for another example of what life should be about.

  • Thanks Nelson

We can't do it without Him!!!

  • Hi Chester

I don't think there is any one that can sat i did not steel.

Some time i steel with my eyes because i also do
photography and look at good photos and get new idea's.

I thin it is your intention that is important here,

    Regards
    Theuns

  • Theuns

I'm not sure that getting good ideas from someone else's photos would be considered stealing. But I do understand that. I think that is more being inspired by someone else.

  • Hey Chester

I feel bad now, based on your post it appears I am a thief big time :)

I think we are all guilty....but we are forgiven!!!!

    Chester!!!

  • Chester, I have to admit I steal all the time.  I steal pens.  I am so used to having a pen in my hand that I'll walk in somewhere, grab a pen to sign my credit card slip and walk out with the pen still in my hand.  Most business owners laugh when I return to the store to give it back to them as usually it has their name on it, it's a promo tool and they want us to steal them.  I still feel guilty and still return them though !

  • Joyce
I have quite a few of those promotional pens in my house. Never thought to take them back. Maybe you are on to something here!!! Maybe that's why Holiday Inn but's there name on the towels?!?! They want you to steal them...now that's quite a statement!! That might be a whole new topic!!!

    Have a Great Day
    Chester

  • O.K.  I'm guilty Chester!  I have a towel or two from a hotel.  I have taken a few pens in my life, but I do realize it was justification.  It is stealing, but I justified it by saying to myself "Oh they have plenty." I like the saying "never take anything that doesn't belong to you."  It is so true.  Thanks for the post which has me looking inside myself.

  • Donna

I think most of us are guilty!!! I have thought "they have plenty" too!! But do they? It's like the old thing my mother used to say "If they jumped off the bridge?" By the way who is "they" I'd really like to meet them!!! lol

    Hi Chester,
I am certainly guilty of having taken lots of trinkets (ashtrays, towels, office stapler, pencils).  Everyone thought it was okay to take these small items home from the office at my college where I worked as a professor for 25 years.  More recently I tend to feel the karma soon after I take something that doesn't belong to me; I lose something that is mine.  Better to keep that proverb in mind and not take anything that doesn't belong to you, including and especially someone else's spouse or partner.
    Erica

  • I've had a few towels myself...and I know what you mean about the karma....something just isn't right. We really need to look at the impact of our decisions on the people around us!!

    Have a Great Day
    Chester

  • Hi Chester,
I think the saddest aspect of stealing is that we ultimately hurt ourselves. If we steal from our company, people could lose jobs because all those paper clips do add up. If we steal from ourselves we are depriving the world of the contributions that we would make. It makes giving our best so much more important--a must do, instead of a nice-to-do. Thanks, always, for the colorful lesson. Be well, Allegra

  • Thanks Allegra

Giving your best all the time is very important. By doing so we can also inspire others!

  • Wow Chester..It's so true! Shoplifting goes on constantly all around us, and we don't even know it's happening. It's quite sad. The ones that are the most tragic are the people that do it for fun just to see if they can get away with it. You see on the news when a high profile celebrity t caught shoplifting a bottle of nail polish and a stereo head phones from the wal mart. Bizarre! You are right. When we take things we are only taking from ourselves. It drives up the price of everything. Then again..I wonder when I hear about stores overcharging 15% of customers without their knowledge with little $1.00 here and $2.00 there. So perhaps that's how they recover it! Yikes...

    Something to think about
